Learn the signs your roof needs a repair or replacement! It’s important to catch the following issues before they create an even bigger problem. Having your roof collapse would be disastrous!
If leaks are found in the attic at any time, your roof most probably has an issue. Leakage after a windy storm can indicate deteriorated flashing or inadequate shingle underlayment. Inadequate shingle underlayment will also cause water from ice dams to leak into the attic after an ice build-up. I realize we’re in Texas and ice build-ups don’t happen that frequently, but I had to throw that tip in there for the readers from the north! Leaks originating underneath shingles not only cause damage to the roof, but also decay the wood around and underneath the roof. Mold and mildew growth can also result from faulty shingle underlayment, creating health issues for the residents inside.
Blistering and peeling of both interior and exterior paint are further signs that your roof is in distress. Excessive temperatures or high humidity caused from insufficient attic ventilation will often create this sort of damage. Exterior decay of both the sheathing and siding of your house are also prime indications of deficient attic ventilation. Often times the inadequate ventilation will cause your heating/cooling system to run excessively. In warm weather, hot air will become trapped in the attic. The air conditioner will then have to work harder to keep the temperature in the house comfortable. In both hot and cold weather, insufficient attic ventilation may cause moisture in the attic to become trapped and condense onto the rafters. Condensed moisture can also drip down onto the insulation and reduce its effectiveness. Excessive energy costs will inevitable result. Having proper attic exhaust ventilation, such as the ridge vent GAF supplies, prevents extreme environments from creating in the attic.
The final indication that your roof is in need of repair or replacement, is the roof visually appearing aged or damaged. Dark “dirty-looking” areas on your roof will often be a warning of environmental pollutants, growing vegetation upon the roof, or loss of granules due to the age. Missing, cracked, or curled shingles are also signal that your roof is near the end of it’s life.
