TPO membranes are single-ply roof membranes constructed from ethylene propylene rubber. They are designed to combine the durability of rubber with the proven performance of hot-air weldable seams. They have been tested as having excellent resistance to ozone, are algae-resistant, environmentally friendly and safe to install. The material's manufacturers are so confident in properly welded seams that the material is sometimes advertised as a monolithic (seamless) roof.

Seam strengths for TPO roofs are reportedly 3 to 4 times those of adhesive and tape seams.

TPO is highly resistant to tears, impacts, and punctures with good flexibility to allow for building movement. TPO's are available in white, light gray, and black with thicknesses of either 45 mils (.045"), 60 mils (.060"), or 80 mils (.080"). The width of the membrane depends on the manufacturer but they usually come in widths of six to six-and-a-half feet and are one-hundred feet in length.

Built-Up Torchdown Roofs

Vendors: MB Technologies, Certainteed, Versico, Carlisle

Torch down roofing (or modified bitumen) is widely used for roofing on commercial roofs. Its name is derived from the method of torching the bitumen sheets onto a fiberglass base during installation. The material used in the torch down process is also known as rubberized asphalt.

Melting of the bitumen by torching creates a strong and consistent seal which makes torch down roofs long-lasting, with an average life span of up to 20 years.

One of the big advantages of torchdown roofing is its ability to protect the roofing from rainwater. This means it is particularly beneficial for commercial roofing, where rainwater could otherwise collect on the surface and cause damage. Although it is slightly more expensive, the roofing torch down method is generally regarded as preferable to the alternative method of roofing used for commercial roofs involving the use of tar and gravel. There are no noxious fumes associated with torch down roofing installation, and torch-down roofs are regarded as more durable and resistant. The high quality resins that are combined with the modified bitumen in torch down roofing installation also help to provide protection from UV rays that could otherwise prove damaging. Torch down roofing usually requires few repairs during its lifetime.

Built-Up Hot Mop Roofs (BUR)

Vendors: MB Technologies, Certainteed, Versico, Carlisle

Built-Up Roofs consist of multiple plies of roof felts laminated together with bitumen. Built-up roof material can consist of bitumen-saturated felt, coated felt, polyester felt or other fabrics. A surfacing is generally applied and can be asphalt, aggregate (gravel or slag), emulsion or a granule-surfaced cap sheet.

Under ideal conditions, a 3-ply built-up roof should last at least fifteen years, a 4-ply should last at least 20 years, and a 5-ply should last at least 25 years.

Built-Up Roofing is one of the oldest and most reliable ways of installing a new roof. It was first known as composition roofing and started in the 1840's. B.U.R.'s come in two basic types, asphalt and coal tar, and three basic components:

  1. the waterproofing component
  2. the reinforcing component
  3. the surfacing component (used to protect the other components)

Roof coatings are an excellent alternative to all out-roof replacements. They are designed to repair wear-and-tear on roofs thus extending the longevity of the roofing material while adding great reflectivity for energy efficiency.

Use of AcryLinkG Reflective acrylic spray can increase energy efficiency by 67%!

One of the most popular choices in mixed-type roofing is the Acrylic spray on, offered by AcryLinkG™. This system, called the Multi-Purpose Crosslinking Acrylic Latex Elastomeric Roof Coating is specifically designed to be applied to existing roofs to increase longevity by increasing energy efficiency, preventing leaks, and sealing cracks and other wear-and tear.
